If you have any kind of dietary restrictions (doctor- or self-imposed) you know what it’s like to want something you can’t have. You might even dream about it sometimes, or get a little tear in your eye when you see someone else eating it, or smell it cooking. And maybe you’ve found or made substitutes, but it just isn’t the same. For my gluten-free girls, some of those things include fresh, melt in your mouth donuts, ooey gooey thick crust pizza, and hot, crispy corn dogs.
When you find one of these things you’ve been missing, and it IS very nearly ohmygoodness the same, it’s like the angels came down from Heaven to serve them to you themselves.
You think I exaggerate, but when an entire food group, an absolute way of living is taken away or changed drastically, it matters. Little things matter.
I don’t often do reviews here on this blog (except books…I do love books), but when I come across something that I just have to share, you know that I love it. If it’s gluten free? EVEN BETTER.
Y’all, shopping gluten free is expensive. Pre-made, packaged GF goodness can be PRICEY. You want a loaf of bread that you don’t have to bake yourself? Here, this tiny one will be six bucks. Oh, and your family of six? They’ll eat the whole thing in one meal. So I hesitate to try a lot of different things, because truly, we’ve been burned. We’ve had bad cookies, and crumbly buns, and flour that tasted like it came out of…something bad. I find what we like, I stock up, and I buy it over and over again. (don’t we all?)
What am I getting at, you ask? So, I was contacted recently to try something from Foster Farms. I snooped around their website and saw gluten free corn dogs. You guys, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a box of frozen gluten free corn dogs. My husband attempted to make them once (he likes to try things like that….experimental cooking), and while they were delicious, they fell apart a lot and the kids poked and prodded at them more than they ate them. In other words, you couldn’t exactly pick them up by the stick and eat them like you’re supposed to be able to.
Corn dogs are one of those things that I used to love picking up at the store, bringing home for the nights when I just couldn’t cook (you know those nights), and my kids would gobble them up. It was a safe meal, you know? So when we basically became a gluten free household overnight, that safe meal and so many others became another thing that I couldn’t count on.
You can imagine the rejoicing that went on when I opened the box and saw those gluten free corn dogs. And it wasn’t just me….the girls cheered. THEY CHEERED. And they hadn’t even tried them, but the fact that they were in our house, they were AVAILABLE TO EAT, that was enough to bring about whoops of joy.
And then we tried them. Y’all, they’re good. They taste, to me, almost exactly like the corn dogs I so fondly remember. Sweet from the honey batter, crispy but soft, delicious. We ate them two nights in a row.
Foster Farms gluten free corn dogs are certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), and are just like their number one selling corn dog counterparts—a 100% chicken frank dipped twice in a (gluten free) crunchy honey batter. They’re available nationwide at Safeway stores, Kroger stores, Raley’s, Lucky, Albertsons, Giant Eagle, Woodman’s, Copps/Roundy’s, Schnucks, Food Lion, Hyvee, and Marsh. You can also call 800-255-7227 to find your local stores.
The best part? I get to give away FIVE boxes. FIVE! I know you want to try them for yourself, right?
US residents only please. Winners will be chosen randomly, contacted via email, and will have 48 hours to respond.
I received a box of corn dogs from Foster Farms for a review and to host a giveaway, but I was not compensated and all opinions are 100% my own.
I had not heard of these! My kids have never had corn dogs and I definitely think they're missing out. Thanks!
You are so right on with everything here. I've tried to make gluten free homemade versions of pop tarts and corn dogs and my kids like them, but they would cheer too if I showed up with these corn dogs.
I really miss Dunkin Donuts' donuts. Although, I never ate them on a regular basis, I miss just being able to go grab a donut and enjoy it.
While I have not gone gluten free I am pretty sure I need to. Anytime I eat bread of any kind i swell up like a puffer fish. My love for pizza leaves me hurting for DAYS.. So that would be what I would miss being gluten free, which I totally need to do apparently..
Pancakes are the one thing I would lijke to eat, but don't. I know that there are gluten free pancakes on the market, but they may as well be called a pile of crumbs, because they don't taste or have the consistency of pancakes.
You just made my daughters whole day with this!! She just told me the other day that she missed corndogs!!
You know, Gluten-Free & Corn-Dog are not two items that I'd ever put together.
But now I'm intrigued (I've just completed the first gluten-free bread, from scratch, that I felt was worth eating…though, the cost comparison meant that I spent, essentially, as much as I'd have spent on a loaf of bread from the store, which like like 4 times as much as I'd spend making a loaf of bread, myself).
Should your husband ever figure out gluten-free corndogs from scratch? Please share.
[…] free folks! Don’t forget that I’m giving away FIVE boxes of gluten free corn dogs! Go, […]
Oh I miss corndogs HUGE…but the two things I miss so much is saltine crackers and garlic bread!
I haven't seen these at the store and would like to try them!
