This fun weekly link up is hosted by Penny of The Real Housewife Of Caroline Country and Amber from Bold Fab Mom. For Ask Away Friday, bloggers pair up, swap 10 questions, and answer them on their blogs. It’s such a great way to get to know someone better!
This week I’m swapping with Katie of Sluiter Nation! Check out my answers below, then hop on over and see how she answered my questions.
1. What is the story with your blog’s name?
So, when I signed up for Twitter in April of 2009, I’m pretty sure my husband suggest “GFunkified”. Or maybe I came up with it…I can’t remember. I’m a white girl without soul, and I thought it was funny. Anyway, I followed some celebrities and random people and hardly posted anything. When I started my blog the following year, I called it
Not Enough Patience and Never Enough Jewelry (I was a mom with a home-based jewelry business). In 2012, I was no longer a “jewelry lady” and wanted to be more “myself”, kind of rebrand my blog to be more “me.” My friend
Julie was like,
just call it GFunkified. Bam. Done.
2. You are a runner. How did you get into running?
My mom told me that she had started the Couch To 5K program almost two years ago. I thought I would give it a shot…I had never been a runner before (in fact, quite the opposite). But I tried it (three times) and on the third time, it stuck.
3. Your About Page says you have your Masters Degree…in what?
Business Administration. My Bachelor’s is in Earth Science. There’s plenty of back story there, but I’ll save that for another day.
4. You have raised LOTS of money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. How did you get involved with that?
You know Laura of
Mommy Miracles. She wrote a post about becoming an
ambassador for LLS and signing up for The Walt Disney World Half Marathon. I commented on the post that it was a dream of mine to run in a Disney race, and one of the LLS folks commented back that I should check it out. And I did, and though I was terrifed of the fundraising, signed up almost immediately.
5. How old were your oldest two children when you married your husband? How did the transition go to having a new dad?
My oldest, Henry, had just turned three when we got married, and Ivy was almost a year and a half. They were too young then to remember their dad, and warmed up to him right away. As soon as we were married, he was never anything but “daddy” to them. Now, of course, they know all about their dad in heaven, too.
6. Do you see any of your first husband’s personality in your two oldest?
It’s funny, because I watched my oldest jump rope the other day, and even though I’m pretty sure I never saw my first husband jump rope, I know that if I had, he’d have looked EXACTLY like Henry did. Henry is an artist, like his dad, and a bit of a dreamer. Not much of a dancer, but still likes to move. He’s also very snuggly…definitely a hugger. A creative type, for sure. Ivy acts a lot like me (poor girl).
7. Do you see T’s personality in any of the kids more than others?
Oh my gosh. YES. The Es, the two youngest, are SO MUCH LIKE HIM. Essie, especially, is his mini-me. She will get right up in your face and mess with you until you practically throw her across the room (or, you know, threaten to), exactly like her father. She doesn’t like to be alone, AT ALL.
8. For each child, what trait(s) did they definitely get from YOU?
Ivy is the most like me. She’s sensitive. She tears up at sad movies. She also loves to dance, and has some pretty good moves (I like to think I do too, when they come out). She loves to shop and pile on the accessories. Henry, like me, gets a little emotional during things like the song about grandparents at grandparents’ day at school. He’s a great speller, and reads well. Essie has my hair, just more blond. She’s also a beast when she’s tired, which I freely admit to being responsible for. Ervin…hmmm. He likes to sing and dance when there’s music in the background. He’s kind of his own creature in looks and personality. They all have blue eyes like me (and my first husband).
9. You are so good at photography and you do lots of posts that include photographs that you take both with your DSLR and your phone…why do you love taking pictures so much?
You know, if I went to therapy or really talked it out, I think I might come to the conclusion that it has something to do with losing my first husband and oldest brother. Or maybe it’s my inability to hold onto not-so-distant memories in this overfilled, unfocused brain of mine. Either way, I don’t ever want to feel like I’m missing pieces.
10. What do you hope your legacy will be?
Oh boy. That’s a loaded question.
Legacy : something (such as property or money) that is received from someone who has died: something that happened in the past or that comes from someone in the past
I want to leave behind stacks and stacks of photos that tell our story. I want to leave behind two strong, independent daughters and two thoughtful, kind sons, all of whom make the world a better place just by being in it.
Thanks for the great (but tough!!) estions, Katie!
Love knowing more about you and your kids.
Never knew the story behind your blog name, so that's awesome.
Yay for #AskAwayFriday!
I LOVE your answers! My favorite part about #askawayfriday is learning tidbits that might otherwise never make it to the blog.
I love the legacy you want to leave and the story of where GFunkified came from. I didn't know you had another blog before – I started blogging and following blogs in 2012, so I guess that is why. 🙂
beautiful answers Greta! I love the legacy you are leaving behind.
I Greta! I' a pretty new Photo enthusiast and I think it may be because I too am so worried about loosing moments. When I was a child my Grandmother had 100s of photos and then they were all lost when our house flooded. I was (and am) so upset about loosing those moments and memories. Now with the DSLR and Camera Phone age I feel I have a second chance with my family's memories (I backup and store my pics EVERYwhere for fear of loosing them!)
Great getting to know you a bit and always great to have you join us at #AskAwayFriday!
This might be my new favorite meme. I love the questions Katie asked and your questions for her were just as good. I like that neither of you were too predictable with the questions. I'm going to have to try and find a partner to join in soon.
I totally get what you are saying about the photos. I take what most people would say are too many but it gives me comfort that I'm capturing the little things for my girls. Maybe they won't care but I feel like I need to for some reason.
This is awesome. Great questions, and great answers. I love how we learn so much about one another with these posts.
As soon as the spring thaw hits New England, I am starting the couch to 5k program. Hopefully, the third time will also be a charm for me too!
I am starting to really love photography too. I finally have gotten brave enough to ditch my auto settings and it has been fun to figure out how to really use my DSLR!
MBA here too! What did you concentrate in? I did Marketing and Investment Finance. The first I use all the time. The second I abandoned years ago.
Nice to meet you! S.
I'm nowhere as near as good as you in taking photos, but I definitely take a lot of pictures even of myself because I only have about five from the time I was born until the end of high school. I wish I could show my kids but there's nothing there.
I adore photography too. I've been wanting to participate in the weekly photography gig you and Alison have going, but I can't seem to get it together. But I am like you, I want to leave behind stacks of photos (well maybe books of photos) so our family will have our stories. There's nothing like having those stories of the past, to know where you came from. I worked in that industry for years, helping people tell their stories through their photos. I love the story behind your blog name, by the way! So nice to meet you! I just followed you on twitter too. 🙂
This is such a fascinating link up. I love learning ore about everyone. I recently got my first big girl camera and will def check out your photography posts.
So great getting to know you better! After hearing everyone talk about the photography bug, I am starting to get a bit more interested. I think that is the best legacy of all! 🙂 I always found it funny to watch what traits and how many were distributed to each child…they can end up such diverse little characters! Have a great week!
I LOVED reading this the day before I get to meet you at BBCSTL! Your legacy wish is beautiful.
