Denise, of According to Denise, is a mom of a son and daughter, stepmom of three boys, wife and part-time-from-home software engineer. She’s the kind of person that you feel like you have known forever, that you can chat with online for a good part of the day, even if you haven’t actually met in real life. She seems real, and relatable, and is always so easy to talk to. I just love her!
Thanks so much for being here today, Denise!
Michelangelo is my favorite ninja turtle. I was in high school when the live action movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out and I’m comfortable admitting that I saw it and loved it. I mean, come on, giant turtles who crack cheesy jokes and kick butt, what’s not to love? My two youngest have recently discovered the animated series on TV and have become somewhat obsessed with ninja turtles. They run around the house “ninja training” and talk about the pizza loving turtles pretty regularly.
So what do I do? I immediately buy the movies so we could watch them together. Apparently there are four in total though I only knew about the first two.
We watched the first one and it was so nice to see them enjoy something that I enjoyed when I was younger. We snuggled and talked about how we all think Mikey is the coolest ninja turtle and how it is weird that in the TV show he makes gross combinations of food that always include pizza but in the movie they just eat regular pizza. And we all say along together “I love being a turtle!”
I have always loved movies and TV. When I was a kid I would watch all kinds of movies with my parents and brother. A love of movies is something that has connected me with my Dad especially all my life. My oldest stepson is also a big movie fan and so it is something we can connect over. We have movie nights every weekend my stepsons are here.
I really enjoy sharing old favorites with the kids. I watch their faces to see if they catch the jokes or love the parts that I really hope they do.
When they ask to rewatch one of my all time favorites, it makes me happy because I feel like we have a little something special that makes us a little closer.
Maybe one day when they have their own kids and their little ones discover the latest incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles they will share that their favorite turtle is Michelangelo and so is their Mom’s and they will snuggle and talk and laugh feel a little bit closer.

Bonding over movies – how awesome is that?
Lovely to see your here, Denise!
Thanks Alison! I love the snuggles that go along with it though I imagine those wont last for too many more years.
TMNT…yep! Saw that too when I was in high school. There really is something about those turtles. I also share a love pf movies woth my dad. We still go to see movies together. My girls are still young but slowly as they get older I share with them movies from my past too. I can't wait for them to get older (well I can and I can't but that's a whole different comment for a whole different post…you know what I mean) so I can share with them the movies I have always loved. There is something very special about movies. They fill us with emotions and memories and connect us with the people we share them with.
It's been a long time since I saw a movie with my Dad. He came with us to the theater for Star Wars Episode I! My parents should come and have a movie night with us. That would be so fun!
So nice to see you here! I love when my kids and I watch the old stuff that I grew up with – although sometimes it's apparent that I am enjoying it more than they are – like when I took them to see the new Muppet Movie a few years ago, I was clearly the one who liked it the best!
Oh there are some that they clearly don't understand why I like them. I tried to get my oldest to watch The Pirates of Penzance with me and that was not going to happen.
I love bonding over movies and TV. My husband and I quote favourite movies all the time, it's like we have a little routine once we get started. 🙂 I have already watched a few of my old favourites with our oldest, who by the way, love Ninja Turtles, too. 🙂
We are BIG movie quoters around here too. Except that my husband always brings out obscure ones no one else gets so we tell him that he is doing it wrong.
I love to bond over TV and movies! We pick an older series and end up watching that ONLY when we are all together. We are on season 4 now of Gilmore girls. It has taken us 2 years to get to that point. The kids will ask "Can we have a Gil's night" and we pull out some snacks, grab blankets and pillows and enjoy. We watch one episode and sometimes the kids beg to watch more – and we do! We are a blended family too – so have a pact that we will only watch this show when we are all together – so sometimes it takes a while to see the next episode between schedules and life!
Oh that is such a great idea! I love that you have that special series to go through together.
Oh I love the Ninja Turtle movies and yes a great way to bond and spend time together!
They are so fun even after all these years
I love sharing old series with my kids. For awhile my daughter was totally into Happy Days and the Brady Brunch. Now she wants to watch Full House all the time, which was never one of my favorites. I know, I know. Everyone else loves it. And I was super excited when my son fell in love with Scooby Doo.
Mine just recently caught an episode of Full House but didn't really get into it. But they are big Scooby fans. They like the old school ones as well as the new stuff.
Denise, this is adorable. I LOVE that you love the ninja turtles and share that love with the kiddos. You are, as always, hilarious and awesome.
You should see when I ninja train with them. Now THAT is hilarious.
Um, I think vlog?Sent from The Furb.
Epic vlog
Not movie-wise, but my kids have gotten into Animaniacs recently. As someone who taped those episodes in college, I completely embraced Wakko, Yakko and Dot for the first time in 20 years. 🙂
Love Animaniacs. So much better than a lot of what's on tv these days.
I love sharing the shows and movies I liked as a kid with my kids. You make remember that I want to watch "Annie" with my kids. I know, random. 😉
I haven't seen that in a really long time. My daughter might watch it but the boys would all probably whine if I tried.
I'm not a huge fan of movies myself but there are a few that I have bonded with my oldest son over as we go out on movie theatre dates. Those ones are special to me.
Aw going out for dates is really cool!
Kids love it when we share movies and shows we loved as kids. I've done this too but with mixed results. For instance, The Princess Bride went over wonderfully with my kids. The Dark Crystal, notsomuch. I may have been a little overzealous and introduced it a little too early. Four is much too young to watch zombified creatures, even in muppet form.
Absolutely adore The Princess Bride. The kids loved it too. I don't think I've ever seen The Dark Crystal but mine might enjoy the zombie creatures right up until bedtime 🙂
