Welcome to #iPPP! Sarah at The Sunday Spill and I want to see your funny, your yummy, your heartfelt, your favorite phone photos of the week. All you need is a blog post containing at least one photo from any phone camera. Link up below!
It rained all morning Sunday, and I was sure that our afternoon plans would be ruined. We had big plans, after all. They included a trip to the zoo, fun at the playground while I ran a 5K, and then dinner. Our biggest three kids have been on a trip with my parents and my brother and sister-in-law, so it would be Erv, myself, and my husband.
The rain stopped eventually, and by the time we got to the zoo, the sun was out again and it was 90 degrees. I started to think that a 5K in the heat and humidity wasn’t going to be all that fun as we walked around the zoo, picturing sweat dripping in my eyes as I huffed and puffed down the street.
The zoo is small, and apparently, at 4pm (an hour before closing), a lot of the animals are done for the day and close up shop. We saw some (as T said, the big ones that can’t hide), like the giraffes, gorilla, elephants, lions and hippo.
A lot, though, were no where to be seen and we found ourselves with an extra 45 minutes (on top of the hour I planned for) to kill before the 5K started, right across the street,
Between the zoo parking lot and the shelter house where the starting line was is a big playground, with a small train and a lot of equipment. It was hot, but we stayed in the shade while Erv played (mostly on the train). We had snacks and drinks and waited.
I started to get nervous as other runners started arriving…they looked fast, and fit, and serious, and there weren’t a lot of them. I’ve never done a 5K by myself before…usually, I’d have my mom or a sister-in-law to run with and talk to, but I didn’t know anybody there. Plus, I had gotten a free registration through active.com so I wouldn’t be wasting any money if I backed out, had already picked up my packet, and was with a couple of boys that, I think, wouldn’t have complained at all if we left at 5:30 pm to go ahead and have dinner. I had pretty much talked myself out of running the race, and said as much on my Facebook page.
As always, though, I got enough encouragement to not just give up and go home. And I thought, maybe all of these lean runners in their perfectly coordinated short shorts and tank tops would keep me going faster than I could on my own.
I was right. Straight out of the gate, I kept up with the pack (to an extent) and somehow managed to run the first mile in 7:50 min. That’s at least a full three minutes faster than my own comfortable pace. THREE MINUTES. Which is precisely why it took me twice that long to run the second mile. (And believe me, it felt twice as long). I finally finished about three minutes over my fastest 5K time, completely red-faced, sweaty, and wanting to throw up.
But I didn’t give up. I didn’t say “screw it, let’s go eat,” designate my t-shirt as a not-in-public, wear-to-bed-only garment, and let my fear take over my head (and my legs). I finished strong, even if everything in the middle was (more than) slightly embarrassing. And I didn’t come in last.
And, like they said on Chuggington yesterday, “it’s not about winning, it’s about taking part.”
I did, however, need a drink after it was all over.

Good for you for still running the race! I might have just said "to hell with it" myself! 😉 And I find if I go all out at the beginning I'm worth nothing for the rest of it so I hear you on that.
p.s. that pic of Erv by the lions looks like he is RIGHT BY the lions! lol.
Right?! I was practically worthless for 2/3 of the race after starting so fast. I blame everyone else, of course. 😉
I know…there was literally only a plate of glass between them!
I talk myself out of a LOT of things. I'm glad you forged ahead. Because looky you, you did it!!
I did it! I kind of sucked at it, but I did it. 😀
I think, that drink was well deserved after your hard work. Good for you for sticking with it and finishing!!! Love the pic of Erv and the lion… so hard to tell there's a window there.
I do definitely think I deserved it. It was tough, and hot. So, thanks!
I try to talk myself out of things all the time. And then, like you did, when I follow through with my plans I feel better for having done it. Way to go!
And sometimes there is such wisdom in children's programs, isn't there? 🙂
Thanks, Kim! And yeah….those kids' shows sure have lessons to be learned. 😀
Three important things:
1) Erv in the train (and everywhere else) is SO cute.
2) You look skinny!!
3) Yay you for that first mile being three minutes faster – and finishing the race – that's awesome!
Thank you, thank you, and thank you, Katie! Seriously. This comment may have made my day (the first time I read it, and again just now). 🙂
I love that picture with the elephant getting a shower!
And congrats on the run! I That was a well deserved drink after.
I love the elephant picture, too! That was definitely a moment to ask my husband to take one of us. And thank you! One more (very tough, hot race) under the belt.
Sometimes it is so hard not to start out too fast! 7:50 mile? You were flying, not running 🙂
I was flying, until I hit that second mile and fell to the ground. 😀 I didn't know it was possible, but I DO know that I'd rather not do it again!
Isn't is such an amazing feeling facing and tackling that fear! I love it and I have a lot of fears. Even something silly like taking a walk alone through campus.
I say it all the time, you are amazing and I am so inspired by your desire to keep pushing yourself!
Go girl!!!
Oh and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that picture of Erv next to the Lion. Yikes!
It was a very real fear that I didn't even know I had until an hour before the race, literally. I didn't even consider that I'd have a problem. But it did feel good to finish it!
Thank you for all of your support, Kerry!
(isn't that an awesome picture? It kind of took my breath away)
It was a badge of honor on my hs cross-country team if you puked at the end of a race. Way to go you for finishing and getting a PR!!
P.S. Those drinks look scrumptious!
Haha, I've come VERY close to puking on a few races! ANd thank you…no PR, but I finished!
And yeah, those drinks at Outback are SOSOSO yummy.
Good for you for sticking with it and finishing. Plus you are now that much closer to your goal of 500 miles.
I am! One of the reasons I forced myself to do it, because I was counting on that three miles last week. Thanks, Jennifer!
You did it and that's awesome! You are an inspiration.
Thank you so much, Kamerine!
SO proud of you for doing it. Seriously. You would have regretted backing out. And a race is a race is a race and you have another one under your belt now.
I know I would have regretted it, but I was SOCLOSE. And, I've never done a race in the heat, or one that small, so while it sucked, it was definitely a new experience.
Congratulations! What an awesome accomplishment! (And I love that photo of Erv with the lions… it's so cool that the glass divide isn't easily seen.)
Thanks, Cheryl! I couldn't believe the lions were just sitting there, one with her hair smooshed up against the glass. It was a little nuts!
Woooooot for you- and for that drink afterwards!
I seriously needed that drink…but after the run, it almost made me puke. Ah well!
You are such an inspiration to me, Greta. I hope you know that. Go you!
Thank you so much, Katie. It's really not easy for me, but I've found my stride, I think, and I'm really glad that it can somehow inspire other people. It's crazy to me!
I even think I need a drink after seeing you sweat LOL gulp gulp
HA! I'm not sure how to take that, Nadia. 😉
I hate running in the heat. Ugh.
A 7:50 min mile? Girl that's amazing!!! I love that you did this and I love that you are quoting Chugginton!!!
I love that picture of Erv and the lions, it looks like he's just stanidng right next to them. Awesome shot.
IT SUCKED. Ha! And I may have been able to actually get a PR, had I NOT run a 7:50 mile (which, honestly, I did not know was even possible). Doing the last two miles was ROUGH.
Chuggington was kind of serendipitous, the very next day. And then they tweeted me!!!!!!
The lion picture is kind of awesome, isn't it? That moment took my breath away a little bit.
Bravo! Go you! And … I'm inspired, as always.
Thank you, Jennie. 🙂 I'm proud of myself, but it sure was tough.
Wow! Wish i could do that too
I bet you could! Just, don't make the same mistakes I did. 🙂
[…] Sunday was our zoo and 5K day. […]
awesome!!! You did great!!! Those drinks looked very yummy!!!
They were SO good. Thanks!!
Good for you!!! Those last 30 before a race are always my worst. It is a total mental game at that point. Way to go!!! 🙂
It was a huge mind game! Thanks, June!!
very cute pics! love the elephant getting a bath!
I know, isn't it fun?! I had to ask hubs to take a picture of it. 🙂
Good for you! Great pictures, and oh that drink looks delicious!
Adorable photos! The drinks look awesome, and good for you for doing it! yay!
Those drinks WERE awesome. 😀 Thanks, Gina!!
LOVE the pictures!
Thanks, Jeanae!
