Happy fourth of July, fellow Americans! And happy (late) Canada Day, friends up north! I hope you’ve had some cold beer, hot bbq, and gorgeous flashes of color in the sky (or, you know….whatever it is that you use to celebrate).
Welcome back to the new #iPPP link-up. Pick your favorite phone photo (or least favorite, most interesting, yummiest, WTF-iest), write up a quick post about it, and link up here or at Mama Mash’s place!

************************************************
My oldest son will be seven in October. He just finished kindergarten, and he’s smart and creative. But, he doesn’t like homework and he will not do anything for school that he doesn’t have to (I’m afraid he may have inherited my lack of ambition).
I think he has it the hardest, being the oldest and the first one to do things. His little sisters watch him closely, and are never far behind in their accomplishments.
Because of Henry’s non-interest in all things scholarly, when he reaches a mental milestone, I’m floored.
He’s been reading words here and there for months, usually at dinner, on menus or signs, things like that. I knew he would be able to read a book to me, but he has been refusing.
FINALLY, at bedtime this weekend, we sat on his bed and he read the story.
Is it bad that I’m excited about not being the only bedtime story reader anymore?
He looks so thrilled to be reading!
I think he is! There's definitely freedom that comes with it. I just have to remember not to let him read The Bloggess book over my shoulder….
Awesome! I hope he'll continue to love reading.
And I thought the flashes in the Sky in July are the spaceships from Independence Day (hee hee)? We did have a good Canada Day, even though the kids on the campsite next to us got busted by the cops and we could not get high off their weed fumes any longer. It was fun while it lasted 😉
Love your link-up!
Hahahaha! Kerstin, you crack me up.
This is a great story and in your last picture he looks so proud of himself. It's absolutely precious!
I really think he is! And it may have also been a bit of "here's your smile, not get the camera out of my face." Ha!
Aw! I love it when kids love books- and yep, he seems pretty proud of himself. Great job mama, happy 4th!
Happy 4th to you, Farrah! (Or…um….5th) It's so exciting to see him reading….even if it is a Lego catalog at breakfast. 😀
AWESOME! Even better is the look of pride and excitement on his face. Have a wonderful holiday!
I know, right?! It's like a whole new world for him!
Yay!! That is huge, congratulations!
Thanks! It's all him, though. The kid won't let me help him with school. Oh, but he does answer daddy's quiz questions at dinner. 🙂
He looks so happy about his reading! That's wonderful. My oldest was slow to get into school – and she was one of the younger ones when she started. But she caught up with everyone and then some, so now she's in the gifted program 🙂 Sometimes it really clicks when they're ready!
That's awesome, Katie! He "gets" it at school, he just doesn't care to pay much attention. :/ I do thnk he'll have his nose in a book a lot from now on, though! He can read fun stuff!
I was so excited when my oldest finally learned how to read so I wouldn't have to read bedtime stories all the time. Learning to read is a big milestone that should always be celebrated.
Right?! Bedtime stories can be tedious. I'm so excited for him (and me).
Oh hooray for him {and you!}! This absolutely warms my teacher heart! Love!
Now I just have to be extra careful of what he sees (to read)!
