We are now 5/8 of the way through swimming lessons. I’m counting down the minutes until they’re done at 11:55am on Thursday.
The hours spent by the pool (not in the pool or near the pool, mind you, unless you want to get yelled at by the eagle-eyed lady that keeps non-lesson-goers far, far away) make me cranky, yes. It’s boring for more than half of time, since less than half of the time is actually spent with one of my kids in a lesson. And it’s hot.
Some of the fun things the kids have done to entertain themselves: ballroom dancing, LeapPad games, snapping the straps of their shoes together to make a necklace, making forts with the towel, eating Cheetos, eating snack mix, eating fruit gummies.
BUT. The kids (when they’re actually allowed in the pool to swim) have a ball. There has only been one tiny episode in the big pool when my biggest boy got scared.
First up every morning is Henry. I love to watch him, because he’s like a little rubber band ball, bouncing up and down, going under the water and flying back up. Over and over again. He did get scared in the deep part, but he has gotten so much more comfortable in the water. Before this summer, he didn’t even like to go under water.
After a break, it’s Essie’s turn. She is also a joy to watch, literally. She does just what her teacher tells her to do, no hesitation, with a perma-grin plastered on her little face. Sometimes, she floats around like a little water bug, making a big circle and then coming back to the other Aquatots. She has so much fun in the water, and just like Henry, before this summer, she wasn’t comfortable going under.
After ANOTHER 30 minute break, it’s finally Ivy’s turn. She’s my little fish this year, and even though she has to wait two hours while she watches everyone else swimming, she has had so much fun. Just like in school, she’s shy with her swim-mates, and doesn’t speak up much, but she does what she’s asked (even sitting next to the boy that gets reprimanded All. Lesson. Long.). She’s a rule-follower, and she’s quiet, but she’s taking it all in and learning.
Next year, I’m planning the schedule better.
I’m also linking up with Galit and Alison for Memories Captured this month.

Dang. What's with the pool nazis?
I love that last picture. A lot.
I know, right?! I watched dragon lady stare at a toddler for at least two minutes straight today, wondering how long the mom was going to let her play before she noticed that her daughter had laser holes in her head. Yikes.
I love that picture, too….I ordered a canvas of it. 🙂
The pictures are great, so cute your little ones!
We live right across the street from the pool, it's been a lot easier since the kids are big enough that I can just send them over there!
Oh, that would be so nice. We have to drive 30 minutes to get there every day. But it's a great pool, and great teachers.
Thanks, Kerstin!
Oh that sounds like a whole lot of waiting! I'd so be counting down, too!
But that last photo? So worth it! Love!
As long as we have snacks, it's not too terrible. 🙂 I know, though….I was so glad I got that picture before they got in trouble!
Looks like all that waiting is worth it judging by the smiles on their faces. I could watch my kids for hours in the pool. They have so much fun… my little fishies! Can I link up my Picture Perfect Sunday post?
Absolutely, Susi! I could definitely watch them for the two and a half hours, if they were swimming that whole time. It's the in between stuff that gets us all. 😀
They deserve a medal for being so patient. You deserve fifteen medals and a day at the spa for doing it with them 🙂
Right?! They have been so good, considering. And so have I, considering. 😀
You deserve a vacation after all of that!
I know, right?! Somewhere where I can actually get IN the pool!
We did lessons for my youngest for the first time this year. She loved it….except, like yours, when they went into the big pool – tears o' terror! I agree with Angela & Kimberly…medals & vacation earned! :>
Haha, thanks! I'm just glad that tomorrow is the last day!!
That last picture is the best – I'd definitely be sick of swim lessons by now, but I can't say that it's rare for me to feel that way about something my kids enjoy 🙂
Ha! I feel ya, Katie! And I love that last picture, too. Cute little buns. 🙂
That makes for a not so fun pool day!
Not fun at all, at least for me! They get to have a whole 25 minutes of fun. :/
Such cute fishies, they are!
Why, thank you, Cheryl!
Aw, I love water babies, they're such a joy to watch. Next year, they'll just swim, who needs lessons? 😉
Haha, I wish!!
WE're still in "mom and baby" class, where I get in the pool with him to swim. We actually only had two lessons, then he got sick, so we have to make them up in the fall. But it's such a PITA. Half the time he hates what we're doing or isn't listening or would rather splash..of course, he's only 20 months old, so that might explain some things 😉
There are at least two mom and baby classes that go on while we sit there, and there are definitely some babies that SO aren't into it!
I follow your swimming lesson saga on Instagram and love it! I had no idea though your littlest fish had to wait 2 hours! OMG. My boys would never go for that.
I know, right? Thank goodness they enjoy the short lessons enough to wait through the rest of it!
Adorable last photo! Good on you though for making sure they learn to swim. So important. I can understand how you want the lessons to be over. Tiring!
It is SO important. But ugh. Not good scheduling on my part!
Ok, the zebra-striped number is adorable. I wish they made mommy swimsuits that cute!
Isn't it so cute?! I just got it at Wal-Mart last weekend. And yeah…I wish mine was that cute!
Too cute. You are a good mama to sit there all that time. Guess today you are officially through. Hurrah!
Wow – you have to sit through three rounds of swim lessons. That's dedication! Good for you though – it's so important.
Dude, lessons at different times for the kids suck. My youngest went to lessons in the am and my oldest at night. I felt like I was living at the pool but never allowed to get in the water.
Ugghh…this reminds me that I have to sign Gia up. I was so happy to be done with that part of raising kids. LOVE the pics and the link up! Something to feed my new addiction.
[…] Bucket List. Then things calmed down and heated up outside. Yeah, we’ve had bible school and swimming lessons, and a little trip here and there. But for the most part, we’ve stuck around here, swimming […]
You are such a trooper! Sitting through swim lessons in the hot summer is not one of my favorite things. So good for them to learn to be comfortable in the water, though. Love the pics!
[…] Last day of lessons!! The kids did great and all passed. Whew. They all had a blast and that almost made up for the WAITING. […]
[…] The kids rode bikes, played in the sprinkler, took swimming lessons. […]
