In my last post, I mentioned Cancun. If you live in Kansas or the midwest or have a TV, you probably know that there was a “blizzard” last week, aka “snowmaggedon”. If you know T. and I, you know that we’ve been planning our last-ditch, still-a-family-of-five, kids-free, better-late-than-never honeymoon for two months. Well, those two things collided. Hard. And one knocked the other on the ground. T. had put in for his vacation, his mom had asked off of work to come stay with the kids for five days, and we were VERY, VERY excited about our trip to the all-inclusive, adults-only resort in Cancun, where the weather was 80 degrees last week.
Because of the snowstorm, T.’s mom came on Tuesday morning via Amtrak, to make sure that she could make it here and we could go. Late Tuesday morning, I attempted to check-in online for our flight, and found out that it had already been cancelled. Twenty-four hours ahead of time. I was calm for a while. I got on the phone with Expedia, with whom we had booked the entire trip. T. got on the phone with the airline and found out that, yes, there was another flight to Cancun. On Sunday. The day we were to come back. That was it for that airline. The only other flights (which may or may not have also been cancelled) involved staying overnight in Atlanta or Dallas or someplace not in Mexico. As a consolation prize, I got to stay on the phone, on hold, for four and a half hours that day, trying to get our money back.
So. That was that. Severe disappointment. And that’s an understatement. I still don’t really know what to say about the whole thing. People keep asking if we can reschedule. Well, not before Bean is born. T. only has 11 vacation days left for the whole year and it’s only February. He still has to take vacation when Bean is born AND our kazillion Christmases in December, for which there aren’t enough weekends and there isn’t enough time during the weekends. T.’s mom, our Cancun babysitter, has no more time off of work for the school year. And I’m now 32 weeks pregnant, with scheduled jewelry shows and getting more uncomfortable every day.
Maybe next year.
But, T. had already made all of his plans to NOT be at work for three days last week, and his mom was already at our house, so we decided to just get away for a few days. We went to the Great Wolf Lodge, about 45 minutes away. It was still snow-covered and below freezing, and not Cancun. But we went. The only good thing about the snow storm was that the place was deserted for the first two days we were there. After that, the families and all of their kids took over.
I didn’t take too many pictures…I wasn’t really feeling like it, plus I thought our kids would resent us someday when they found out where we went without them. But I took a few…
Honestly, I know he would have been born too early, but I kept *kind of* hoping I would go into labor. Just so then I could say, well, it was a good thing we weren’t in Cancun! No such luck.
It was nice to get away. Maybe at some point in the future, I’ll have more positive things to say about it. For now, I’ll continue to tear up thinking about the beach and the 24 hour room service.
